The First Ward Community Fund, Charlotte Housing Authority (CHA) and Police Activities League (PAL) held a youth basketball clinic on Saturday, March 19th at the First Ward Recreation Center from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The center is located at 610 E 7th Street.
Charlotte, North Carolina, March 19, 2011: More than 120 people attended and 70 children participated in this one-day clinic. Former professionals, college stand-outs and current college players taught the game and talked about the importance of bringing the competitive spirit to all aspect of life – especially education. Parents learned about PAL and CHA programs.
In addition to basketball, participants were treated to lunch and a pair of tickets to a Charlotte Bobcats’ game. Several of the Lady Cats offered tips on dance and cheering. CHA’s Stan Washington said he was “pleased at the support the clinic received from the Charlotte Bobcats. Thanks to their sense of community, this is a very special day for many of our young clients”. The Community Fund’s Bob Szymkiewicz said “the student volunteers were awesome. Those from Belmont Abbey and Johnson C. Smith really added to the event and helped re-enforce the idea of the importance of education”.
